Macross rolled into Anime NYC this month with a Delta the Movie: Passionate Walküre screening, which is as good a cue as any to rank where the giant-robot canon actually stands.
Quick answer
The best mecha anime, ranked on SenpaiRanks by adjusted score, is Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 at 8.89, then Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (8.68), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (8.27), Neon Genesis Evangelion (8.05), and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (7.55). Each title carries a dual-axis score — Consensus and Quality — so you can tell a hype machine from a show that ages well.
Why Code Geass runs the board
Both Code Geass seasons top the ranking, and the R2 finale edges the first season — a rare case of a sequel scoring higher on both axes. It's the genre's best-argued case that mecha is really about the pilot's politics. Sunrise's grip on this list is no accident.
The pillars behind it
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is Gainax going for broke — spiral energy, galaxy-sized drills, zero irony. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the one every later show answers to, still an 8.05 three decades on. And The Witch from Mercury proved modern Gundam could reboot for a new audience without losing the franchise's teeth.
The read for newcomers
According to SenpaiRanks, mecha is one of the most Consensus-and-Quality-aligned genres at the top — the classics are both loved and durable — but the gap widens fast in the mid-tier, where nostalgia props up Consensus while Quality slips.
