2026 is a heavyweight year for anime on the big screen. Demon Slayer's Infinity Castle trilogy opened the door, Madoka Magica returns to theaters in August, Made in Abyss goes theatrical, and franchises from Sword Art Online to Mononoke all have films in play. Here's the ranked shortlist — and unlike a single-score list, SenpaiRanks scores every film on two axes (Consensus and Quality), so you can tell a broadly-loved crowd-pleaser from a divisive swing.
Quick answer
The standout 2026 anime films are Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Infinity Castle (ufotable), Solo Leveling: ReAwakening (A-1 Pictures), and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime — the Movie: Scarlet Bond's follow-up feature. According to SenpaiRanks, Infinity Castle leads this group with an adjusted 7.4 on both the Consensus and Quality axes, ahead of Solo Leveling (7.4) and the Slime film (7.2). Most 2026 films release in Japanese theaters first, with Crunchyroll and regional partners handling global runs — check each entry below for the specific where-to-watch.
How we rank films
A quick note on method, because it's the whole point of using SenpaiRanks over a single-number site like MyAnimeList: our Consensus axis rewards films that a broad audience agrees on, while the Quality axis rewards films that hold up under weighted, lifecycle-corrected scrutiny. New releases enter at a baseline until votes land — which is your cue to rate what you've seen and move the board.
The ranked list
1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Infinity Castle
ufotable's Infinity Castle arc is the biggest anime theatrical event of the year, kicking off a film trilogy that adapts the manga's climactic final battle. It went out as a global theatrical release with Crunchyroll and Sony/Aniplex behind the international run. Per SenpaiRanks, it tops this list on both axes — see the full breakdown in our Infinity Castle where-to-watch guide.
2. Solo Leveling: ReAwakening
A-1 Pictures' recap-plus-preview film bridges Solo Leveling's first season into its second, and it played in theaters worldwide via Crunchyroll. It's the rare recap feature that scores like a main entry — SenpaiRanks tracks it near the top of the 2026 film board.
3. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime — the Movie
8bit's Slime feature keeps one of isekai's biggest franchises on the big screen. If you're catching up on the TV side first, our Slime Season 4 and movie where-to-watch guide lays out the order. On SenpaiRanks it holds a strong Consensus score for a franchise film.
4. Sword Art Online: Unanswered//butterfly
The latest SAO theatrical entry continues the franchise's film run under A-1 Pictures. It sits at a baseline on SenpaiRanks pending votes — rate it here if you've caught it.
5. The Apothecary Diaries — the Movie
Maomao's mystery-drama makes the jump to film off the back of a runaway-hit TV run. It's one of the most anticipated non-action films of the year; SenpaiRanks lists it at a pre-release baseline that its fanbase will move fast once it screens.
6. Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi
Kinema Citrus takes the Abyss theatrical, with a new trailer, cast, and theme song revealed in early August. Full details are in our Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi release guide.
7. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising
SHAFT's long-awaited sequel to 2013's Rebellion hits Japanese theaters — including IMAX — on August 28, 2026. It's the franchise's first new film in over a decade:
8. Mononoke the Movie: The Serpent God
The third of the reborn Mononoke Karakasa films continues Twin Engine's lush, textile-inspired revival of the cult horror series. SenpaiRanks tracks it on the Quality axis where its distinctive art direction plays best.
