Privacy Policy

SenpaiRanks is an independent anime ranking, news and viewing-tracker service. We collect the minimum data necessary to run the service and to give you a personalized experience: account information, the ratings and reviews you submit, the shows you mark as watched, planned or completed, and basic technical telemetry. We do not sell your personal data to third parties. You can request export or deletion of your data at any time.

SenpaiRanks is operated as an independent project. This policy applies to the website at senpai.app and any subdomains we operate under the same brand. References to "we," "our," and "us" refer to the operators of the service. References to "you" refer to anyone visiting the site, whether or not you have an account.

We collect three categories of information:

Account data. When you create an account we store an email address, an opaque user identifier, a hashed password (if you sign in with a password rather than a magic link or third-party provider), an optional username, and any profile preferences you set. Authentication metadata (last sign-in time, IP address of the most recent session for security review) is retained by our authentication provider.

Activity data. When you rate a show, write a review, mark episodes watched, set a viewing status, or interact with rankings, calendar and news features, we record those actions linked to your account. This is the data that powers your personal lists, your contribution to the global Bayesian ranking, and the recommendations we show you.

Technical telemetry. When you visit the site we collect technical information automatically: the pages you view, the buttons and links you interact with (aggregated, never including personal content), your approximate region inferred from your IP, your device's user-agent string, performance metrics for our pages, and error reports. This data is used to operate the service, prevent abuse, and improve product quality. Whenever feasible the telemetry is recorded without a stable identifier so it cannot be tied back to a single visitor.

We use the data we collect for the following purposes:

• To provide the service: rendering personalized lists, recommendations, the home page news feed, and the ranking pages.
• To operate accounts: authentication, password reset, account recovery, security monitoring.
• To prevent abuse: rate-limiting, spam detection, vote manipulation detection. This includes credibility scoring that downweights suspicious voting patterns.
• To improve the product: aggregate analytics on which features are used, where users drop off, and which content performs.
• To communicate with you: transactional emails about your account, security alerts, and (with separate opt-in) editorial newsletters.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar law, we process your personal data on the following legal bases: performance of a contract (account creation and the features it enables); your consent (analytics and marketing cookies, opt-in newsletters); our legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, aggregate analytics); and compliance with legal obligations where applicable. You may withdraw your consent at any time, request a copy of the data we hold about you, request correction, or request deletion subject to legal retention requirements.

We use a small number of cookies and local-storage entries. Some are strictly necessary to deliver the service (for example, the cookie that keeps you signed in or remembers your language preference). Others are optional and only set if you grant consent through the cookies banner — these support aggregate analytics about how the site is used. We share data only with service providers that are necessary to operate SenpaiRanks, under written agreements that restrict their use of the data:

• A managed database and authentication provider that stores your account and content.
• A content delivery network that serves images and static assets.
• An email delivery provider for transactional emails.
• Anti-abuse and error-monitoring providers that receive limited technical telemetry.

We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with advertising networks. If we ever need to transfer the operation of the service to another entity (for example, an acquisition), we will notify users in advance and the receiving party will be bound by terms no less protective than this policy.

Some of our service providers are located outside your country of residence, including in the United States. Where required, transfers rely on appropriate safeguards including European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses and equivalent mechanisms. We retain account data for as long as your account is active. Once you request deletion, we remove your account information within a reasonable period, except where we are required by law to retain certain records for longer (for example, financial records or records relevant to an ongoing security investigation). Aggregate analytics that cannot be tied to an individual are retained indefinitely.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you have one or more of the following rights:

• Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Rectification: ask us to correct inaccurate data.
• Erasure: ask us to delete your data.
• Restriction: ask us to stop processing your data while a request is reviewed.

SenpaiRanks is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or under the equivalent age in your jurisdiction, such as 16 in some European countries). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete the record.

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced via a notice on the site and, where appropriate, by email to registered users. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
