Hideaki Anno is making his own Yamato. An official website opened on October 6 (JST) confirming Cosmoship Yamato √2199 (*Uchuu Senkan Yamato √2199*, the √ read as "Root"), a feature-length anime film co-directed by Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi at Production I.G and Studio Khara, per Anime News Network and MyAnimeList.

Quick answer

According to SenpaiRanks, Cosmoship Yamato √2199 is a new theatrical anime film directed by Hideaki Anno (*Neon Genesis Evangelion*, Shin Godzilla) and Yutaka Izubuchi (*RahXephon*, chief director of the Yamato 2199 remake), animated at Production I.G and Studio Khara. No release date has been announced. Per MyAnimeList, Anno says the film is developed separately from the ongoing remake series and takes a different path. If you want to watch Yamato today, start with Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (2012, 26 episodes), which SenpaiRanks tracks at an adjusted 8.02, the highest score in the franchise.

The team

Anno and Izubuchi share director credits and the design works. Anno also takes planning with Production I.G founder Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (*Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These*) and sits as executive producer. Shin Office Academy presents. Original work is still credited to Yoshinobu Nishizaki, co-creator of the 1974 series.

This has been a long time coming. Anno said back in October 2024, at the 50th-anniversary screening of the original, that Khara had cleared new anime footage with rights holders Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha, and Izubuchi confirmed he was on board the same night. Anno joined Production I.G's board in August 2025, which explains the studio pairing.

Why Anno and Yamato fit

Anno has called himself a Yamato fan since his second year of junior high, and he planned the opening sequence of Yamato 2199. In the site's statement he frames the film as both a childhood dream and something made for the next generation. Expect his Shin playbook (a hard reset of a 1970s icon) rather than a straight continuation of the remakes, which are still running as the seven-part Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 film series.
