Three magical-girl projects hit the news wire this week — Madoka's Walpurgisnacht: Rising film landed IMAX screenings, a new Precure movie revealed its guest cast, and Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. lined up season 2. Good excuse to settle where the genre's best actually rank.
Quick answer
The best magical-girl anime, ranked on SenpaiRanks by adjusted score, is Puella Magi Madoka Magica at 8.14, followed by Revolutionary Girl Utena (7.70), Little Witch Academia (7.65), Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card (7.47), Hirogaru Sky! Precure (7.41), and Wonder Egg Priority (7.34). Every score is a dual-axis read — Consensus (how broadly liked) and Quality (how well it holds up) — so you see whether a show is a crowd-pleaser, a critics' pick, or both.
The top of the board
Madoka sits at #1 for a reason: it took the genre's sugar and laced it with dread, and both axes agree. Revolutionary Girl Utena is the arthouse pick — 1997, still dissecting fairy-tale gender roles better than shows made this decade. Little Witch Academia is Trigger at its warmest, and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card proved the CLAMP classic could come back without losing the wand.
Still airing, still counts
The genre isn't a museum. Hirogaru Sky! Precure carries Toei's long-running franchise — the same one dropping a new film this year — and Wonder Egg Priority is the modern outlier, a 2021 original that pushed the genre into trauma-drama territory. For the darkest branch, the Madoka Walpurgisnacht: Rising film is the one to watch for.
How to read the ranking
According to SenpaiRanks, magical-girl shows split hard between Consensus and Quality once you leave the top tier — a franchise entry can be broadly liked without holding up, and a cult original can hold up without being broadly seen. That gap is the whole point: MyAnimeList's single number hides it, and our dual-axis board shows it. CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth returns October 7. Our Rayearth watch order covers the 1994 series, Rayearth II and the OVA, and the wider genre is ranked in the best shōjo anime board.
