Sunrise's 2026 revival of Samurai Troopers, the franchise Western fans know as Ronin Warriors, has wrapped its second cour, and the full-season reviews are in. Anime News Network gave episodes 13-24 an overall D, with B grades for animation and art and a B+ for music. So, is Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers worth your time? Here's the honest answer.

Quick answer

Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers is Sunrise's two-cour reboot of the 1988 Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (*Ronin Warriors*). Part 1 aired from January 6, 2026, and Part 2 from July 7, 2026, 24 episodes in total, written by Shōgo Mutō (*Kamen Rider Build*). Crunchyroll streams it. The short verdict is no, not as a whole. The final battle is a genuine payoff, but critics found the road to it messy, full of retcons and characters killed off. According to SenpaiRanks, Part 1 sits at 6.37 Consensus, below the original 1988 series at 6.67. Part 2's board just opened, so your rating counts.

What Part 2 is about

Three months after Ramaga's defeat, the new Troopers are rebuilding the city and mourning Gai. Then a returning threat drags them back to the Demon World, a Divine World faction starts its own campaign against humanity, and a resurrected Ryusei seems to be working for the other side. To survive, the team needs the full power of the Emperor's Armor.

Where it falls apart

Per ANN's review, the second cour leans on one trick: killing off characters, either for quick emotion or to make room for new powers. Half of the Ten Warriors die so the rest can get a backstory, and then they sacrifice themselves again. The Divine World villains run on twist after twist, many explained through flashbacks that change what we saw earlier. The reviewer points to episode 17, which takes back a key secret-code plot point from episode 16. Meanwhile the original Troopers and classic characters like Nasti and Jun barely get anything to do.

Where it lands

The finale really does deliver. The defeated Ten Warriors return to fight next to the team, the Emperor's Armor gets shared across the squad, and the theme song plays inside the story during the last fight. It looks far better than the rest of the season. The CG characters, on the other hand, look worse than before. The question critics are asking is whether one great ending can justify everything before it. ANN's answer was no.

Should you watch it?

If you grew up on Ronin Warriors, the final episodes are worth seeing for the spectacle. Otherwise, the classic is the better watch: the 1988 series still outscores the reboot on SenpaiRanks.
