The Record of a Fallen Vampire is getting an anime, almost 20 years after the manga ended. Pony Canyon opened the site for the TV adaptation of Kyo Shirodaira and Yuri Kimura's Vampire Jūjikai on October 5, with a teaser, a teaser visual, two leads and a 2027 premiere, per Anime News Network and MyAnimeList.
The setup
Thousands of years ago, Vampire King Akabara "Red Rose" Strauss lost his kingdom and his queen. Humans couldn't kill her, so they sealed her away and hid the real seal among thousands of fakes. Strauss is still hunting for it, with dhampirs on his trail, and every 50 years a power called the Black Swan wakes in a human girl with the strength to destroy them both.
The cast and team
- Yūma Uchida as Akabara "Rose Red" Strauss
- Aino Shimada as Bridget Irving Frostheart, a 1,000-year-old dhampir
Character visual — The Record of a Fallen Vampire anime
Mankyū (*The Ramparts of Ice*) directs and writes the series scripts at Zero-G and Liber. jimao designs the characters, and Evan Call, the composer behind Frieren and Violet Evergarden, writes the music. That last name is the one to notice.
Where it comes from
Shirodaira is the writer of In/Spectre (ranking page) and Spiral (ranking page), and this is the dark fantasy he did between them. The manga ran in Square Enix's Shonen Gangan from 2003 to 2007 across nine volumes. Viz Media published it in English, and Yen Press and Manga UP! Global carry it digitally. Timing isn't a coincidence: a new sequel manga, A Dog's Song for Dogs, starts in Shonen Gangan on October 9.
The read
Old manga with a cult following, a respected composer and a director known for mid-budget shows: this could go either way. Until it airs, our dark fantasy ranking is the place to compare, and the show's ranking page opens for votes when it airs.
