Aniplex dropped another character trailer for Fate/Extra Record on September 14 — Chiwa Saitō's Caster this time, after Sakura Tange's Saber and Junichi Suwabe's Archer earlier in the month. The remake of Type-Moon's 2010 PSP RPG lands January 28, 2027 on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4 and Steam. Which is the usual cue for someone to ask the question the Fate franchise has been dodging for fifteen years: what order do you actually watch this thing in?
Quick answer
Watch Fate/Zero (2011, ufotable, 2 cours) first, then Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014, ufotable, 2 cours), then the Heaven's Feel film trilogy (2017–2020). That's the ufotable spine and it covers the three routes of the original visual novel in the cleanest order for a newcomer. Per SenpaiRanks, Fate/Zero holds 8.05 and its second season 8.23 — the highest in the franchise — with Unlimited Blade Works at 8.02 and its second season at 8.06, and Heaven's Feel I. presage flower at 7.90. All three stream on Crunchyroll in most regions; Netflix carries parts of the franchise depending on territory.
The order that actually works
There are two camps and they both have a point.
- Release order (Zero → UBW → Heaven's Feel). Zero is a prequel, so technically it spoils stay night. In practice it's the better-directed entry point, and the "spoiler" is a reveal most viewers see coming. This is the order most people recommend, and the one we'd back.
- Chronological-lite (UBW → Heaven's Feel → Zero). Preserves every twist. Costs you the strongest opening 13 episodes in the franchise. Pick this if you're spoiler-allergic.
Either way, the 2006 Studio Deen Fate/stay night is optional — it adapts the Fate route, it's twenty years old, and ufotable's versions are what the franchise is judged on now.
The side branches
Everything else is a spur you can take or skip:
- Fate/Apocrypha (2017) and Fate/strange Fake — alternate Grail Wars, no prerequisites.
- Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia (2019) — the mobile game's best-loved arc.
- Fate/EXTRA Last Encore (2018, SHAFT, 10 episodes, Netflix) — the one that matters for Fate/Extra Record, since both come out of the same "Extraverse" continuity. It is also famously the hardest Fate anime to follow cold.
- Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya — magical-girl spin-off, tonally a different franchise.
Where the game fits
Fate/Extra Record is a remake, not a sequel: Type-Moon studio BB is rebuilding the 2010 Fate/EXTRA with Arco Wada's character designs, and Aniplex is publishing. Original director Kazuya Nino stepped away in August 2026 for health reasons. Per ANN, the character videos so far cover Saber, Archer and Caster — the three servants you pick between at the start. You don't need to have watched Last Encore to play it, but it's the anime closest to the game's continuity.
How to read the numbers
Four ufotable entries clustered between 7.90 and 8.23 is a tight band, and that's the useful signal: the franchise's ceiling is consistent, its floor is where the spin-offs live. MyAnimeList gives each of these one score; IMDb averages them against a general audience that mostly hasn't watched a Holy Grail War. SenpaiRanks runs Consensus and Quality as separate boards, which is what makes a franchise this fragmented readable at all.
Seen any of them? Put your score on the board — the ranking is only as good as the people voting on it.
