Trigger, 10 episodes, 2022. From CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. Streaming on Netflix. Ten episodes, one doomed arc, no filler. It also did the rare thing of sending players back to a game that had already been written off.

Seven mages, seven servants, one grail, and the cleanest entry point into a franchise that is otherwise a flowchart. 6. Steins;Gate 0 — 8.05
White Fox, 23 episodes, 2018. The sequel game, adapted. It only works if you have finished the original, and it is deliberately bleaker.
7. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai — 7.99
Studio Deen, 24 episodes, 2007. From the 07th Expansion doujin visual novel. The answer arcs to the 2006 question arcs. Dated animation, undated structure — the reveal-by-iteration format still gets copied twenty years on.
8. Castlevania — 7.97
4 episodes, 2017. From Konami's Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Streaming on Netflix. The first season is barely a pilot at four episodes; seasons two through four are where it becomes a genuine gothic epic, peaking at 8.16.

Why visual novels outscore console games
Look at the top four: two visual novels, two Western game franchises with animation studios given room to write new material. The middle of the board — the straight console-to-cour adaptations — is where scores sag. The reason is structural. A visual novel is already a script; adapting it is a matter of selection. An action game is a verb set, and the anime has to invent the story from scratch or compress a fifty-hour campaign into twelve episodes. Arcane and Edgerunners both took the first route and both cleared 8.0. Danganronpa took the second and did not.
