Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (*Mezameru Shinpi*) opened at #6 at the Japanese box office over its first weekend, earning ¥145,525,480 (about US$922,900) in three days, per Anime News Network's report on Kōgyō Tsūshin and comScore figures. It's the first film in Kinema Citrus' new theatrical series, and the first new Made in Abyss animation since The Golden City of the Scorching Sun in 2022.
Quick answer
Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery opened in Japan on October 23, 2026 and placed #6 in its opening weekend with about ¥145.5 million. It's directed by Masayuki Kojima at Kinema Citrus, with scripts by Hideyuki Kurata. No Western release has been announced. On SenpaiRanks, the franchise's top entry is the 2017 TV series at 8.23, with The Golden City of the Scorching Sun at 8.18.
The weekend chart
Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island climbed back to #2 in its 14th weekend. It has sold 12.65 million tickets and made about ¥18.49 billion (US$117 million), making it Japan's biggest film of the year and the 12th biggest ever there. Further down, the 4K restoration of Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart opened at #10, and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend dropped out of the top 10 in its second weekend. That film is heading to North American theaters in February.
Reading the number
A #6 opening is a modest start for a franchise this well liked, but Made in Abyss has always been a niche, word-of-mouth series rather than a blockbuster. The returning team matters more than the weekend: Kojima, Kurata and character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda all came back from the TV seasons.
