Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (*Mezameru Shinpi*) opened in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026, and the official site used opening day to confirm that a second part is in production. It also added five new cast members and released a second key visual. If the news has you looking at a franchise with two TV seasons, three films and a recap split, this is the order that matters.
Quick answer
Made in Abyss watch order: Season 1 (2017, 13 episodes) → Dawn of the Deep Soul (2020 film) → Season 2: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (2022, 12 episodes) → Awakening Mystery (2026 film, Japan theaters now) → Awakening Mystery Part 2 (announced, no date). Skip the 2019 recap films Journey's Dawn and Wandering Twilight if you watched Season 1. All of it comes from Kinema Citrus, adapting Akihito Tsukushi's manga. According to SenpaiRanks, Season 1 holds an 8.23 adjusted score, Season 2 8.18, and Dawn of the Deep Soul 8.16, so all three are top-tier on both of our axes.
The order, step by step
1. Made in Abyss (Season 1)
Riko, Reg and the descent into the Abyss. Thirteen episodes, and the setup for everything else.
2. Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul
This film is not optional. It's new canon that picks up right after Season 1 and leads straight into Season 2. Viewers who skip it end up confused about where Season 2 starts.
3. The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Season 2)
The Sixth Layer arc, with Faputa and the village of Ilblu. It's the darkest stretch so far.
4. Awakening Mystery, then Part 2
The new film carries the main story forward. Returning director Masayuki Kojima keeps the core cast. The new names announced today are Nana Mizuki (Srajo), Akino Watanabe (Nishagora), Shunsuke Takeuchi (Yataramar), Nao Touyama (Sherumi) and Yume Miyamoto (Menae). Part 2 has no release window yet.
