Racing anime is a small genre with an outsized fanbase. Initial D turned the Toyota AE86 into a pop-culture icon, Redline is still the hand-drawn action film animators point to, and its sequel MF Ghost keeps the eurobeat going today. So we ranked the whole grid: every motorsport anime with a real vote base, ranked by SenpaiRanks Consensus, one entry per franchise.

Quick answer

According to SenpaiRanks, the best racing anime is Initial D First Stage (7.99 Consensus), followed by Redline (7.93) and Capeta (7.65). Initial D wins on legacy: a 1998 street-racing series that spawned six Stages, films and the MF Ghost sequel. Redline is the pick if you want one sitting: Madhouse's 2009 film took seven years of hand-drawn animation. For something recent, MF Ghost (2023, 7.01) and Overtake! (2023, 7.00) are the modern entries. Crunchyroll holds the Initial D license in North America, and its catalog availability varies by region.

The ranked list

1. Initial D First Stage — 7.99

1998, 26 episodes. Tofu-delivery kid Takumi Fujiwara turns out to be the fastest downhill driver on Mount Akina. Later Stages score nearly as high (Fourth Stage 7.96, Second Stage 7.94), so the whole franchise holds up. Our Initial D watch order lays out every Stage, OVA and film.

2. Redline — 7.93

Madhouse, 2009 film, directed by Takeshi Koike. JP races a souped-up car in the galaxy's most dangerous race, on a planet that wants everyone dead. It's about 100 minutes of the densest hand-drawn animation you'll find. It also appears in our best anime films of the 2000s.

3. Capeta — 7.65

Studio Comet, 2005, 52 episodes. A kid from a broke single-parent home climbs from karts toward Formula racing. This is the grounded one: money, sponsorship and the real ladder of the sport. It's hard to find legally in English, but worth hunting down.

4. Wangan Midnight — 7.20

A.C.G.T, 2007, 26 episodes. Highway racing on Tokyo's Shuto expressway, built around a cursed Nissan Fairlady Z. It's moodier and more adult than Initial D, from the same era of car-culture manga.

5. Future GPX Cyber Formula — 7.08

Sunrise, 1991, 37 episodes. Near-future Formula racing with AI-assisted cars. The OVA sequels score even higher (*Sin* at 7.25), and it's a key 90s racing title (see our best 80s and 90s anime).

6. MF Ghost — 7.01

Felix Film, 2023, 12 episodes. The official Initial D sequel: public-road racing in a near-future Japan where EVs have taken over, and Takumi's legacy hangs over everything. Season 2 rates a little higher at 7.15, and Crunchyroll has streamed the series.

7. Overtake! — 7.00

Troyca, 2023, 12 episodes. A burned-out photographer starts covering a small F4 team and its teenage driver. It's the most emotional entry on the list and a good choice if you don't care about cars at all.

8. Bakuon!! — 6.56

2016, 12 episodes. A light school club comedy about girls who ride motorcycles. Low stakes, high gear-nerd detail.

9. Mach GoGoGo (Speed Racer) — 6.22

Tatsunoko, 1967, 52 episodes. The original Speed Racer and the Mach 5. It scores low by modern standards, but almost every racing anime on this list owes it something.

10. Highspeed Etoile — 6.22

Studio A-CAT, 2024, 12 episodes. A newcomer in a futuristic electric-racing series. The CG races look great, and it's the newest original on the list.

How we ranked it

One entry per franchise, using SenpaiRanks Consensus scores. If Initial D took every slot it would hold six of the top ten, so we picked each franchise's starting point and named the stronger sequels in the text. Want Yowamushi Pedal's bicycle racing? It's in our best sports anime ranking. Think Redline deserves first place? Rate Redline, because votes move the board.
