Food anime had a strange week. A One Piece restaurant-management sim got a trailer on Tuesday with an October 23 launch, a show about anthropomorphic food ingredients was announced for October 7, and McDonald's Japan put out an opening sequence for a Tsukimi Burger anime nobody asked for. Good excuse to settle the actual question: which cooking anime are worth the time. Ranked by SenpaiRanks' adjusted Consensus score.
Quick answer
Shokugeki no Souma is the highest-ranked food anime on SenpaiRanks at 8.00 adjusted, with Gin no Saji at 7.83 and Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi at 7.52 behind it. Dungeon Meshi — TRIGGER, 2024 — holds 7.44, the strongest score among recent entries. All seven picks below have a mature vote base on the Consensus board. If you want the genre's purest version, it is Shokugeki: J.C.Staff, 2015, 24 episodes, with four sequel seasons that all score above 7.2.
The ranked list
1. Shokugeki no Souma — 8.00 adjusted
J.C.Staff, 2015, 24 episodes. Known in English as Food Wars!. It took the shōnen battle-tournament skeleton and swapped punches for plating, and the structure works better than it has any right to. The sequels hold up unusually well on the board — Ni no Sara 7.90, San no Sara 7.84, Shin no Sara 7.62 — which is rare for a five-season run.
2. Gin no Saji — 7.83 adjusted
A-1 Pictures, 2013, 11 episodes. Silver Spoon. Hiromu Arakawa — yes, the Fullmetal Alchemist author — writing about agricultural high school, where the food story is really a story about where food comes from and what it costs. The second season scores 7.97, higher than the first, and together they are the most honest thing on this list.
3. Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi — 7.52 adjusted
MAPPA, 2023, 12 episodes. Campfire Cooking in Another World. An isekai whose cheat skill is an online grocery order, which sounds like a joke until the show commits to it completely. The second season, also MAPPA, sits at 7.03 with a younger vote base.
4. Dungeon Meshi — 7.44 adjusted
TRIGGER, 2024, 24 episodes. Delicious in Dungeon. Ryōko Kui's premise — eat the monsters you kill — turns into a genuinely rigorous piece of worldbuilding, where the ecology of a dungeon is worked out through its recipes. The highest-scoring recent entry in the genre, and a second season is in production.
5. Amaama to Inazuma — 7.40 adjusted
3xCube, 2016, 12 episodes. Sweetness and Lightning. A widowed teacher and his small daughter learn to cook together, one dish an episode. It is the quietest show here and the one most likely to catch you off guard.
6. Isekai Shokudou — 7.28 adjusted
Silver Link, 2017, 12 episodes. Restaurant to Another World. A Tokyo diner whose back door opens onto a fantasy world once a week. Pure episodic comfort, no plot engine, no stakes — deliberately. Season 2 scores higher at 7.53.
7. Bartender — 7.14 adjusted
Palm Studio, 2006, 11 episodes. Drinks rather than dishes, but the same genre logic: one customer, one problem, one perfectly made thing. The 2024 remake, Bartender: Kami no Glass, sits at 6.94 — the original still wins on our board.

What is actually coming this fall
The genre keeps expanding sideways. Mazenchu, an anime about food ingredients living a school-daily-life, premieres October 7. Bandai Namco's One Piece: Grand Gourmet, a cooking and restaurant-management sim, launches October 23 on Switch 2, Switch, PC, iOS and Android. Neither is a Shokugeki successor, but both signal that "food" has stopped being a genre and started being a format.

Where to watch food anime
- Shokugeki no Souma — Crunchyroll carries all five seasons in most regions; also on Hulu in the US.
- Dungeon Meshi — Netflix worldwide, exclusive.
- Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi — Crunchyroll, both seasons.
- Isekai Shokudou — Crunchyroll, both seasons.
- Amaama to Inazuma — has rotated between services; check your region before starting.
- Gin no Saji — Crunchyroll in most regions, availability varies.
- Bartender — the 2006 original is hard to find legally outside Japan; the 2024 remake is on Crunchyroll.
Dungeon Meshi being Netflix-only and Shokugeki being Crunchyroll-first is the reason a single platform's "best cooking anime" shelf will never be the actual list. We rank the whole genre and then tell you where each one lives.
How this list is built
Adjusted Consensus score, Bayesian-weighted, from voters who watch anime rather than a general audience rating everything from sitcoms to superhero films. Every entry above clears the vote threshold for a stable position. We publish a second axis — Quality — alongside Consensus, because a show can be broadly liked and still not hold up, and one blended average hides that. If you disagree with where Dungeon Meshi sits relative to Shokugeki, the board moves when you rate them; that is the point of having an account.
If you came in from an adjacent shelf, the best light novel anime ranking covers most of the isekai-cooking branch, and the best dark fantasy anime ranking has Dungeon Meshi's structural neighbours.
