On September 11, OceanVeil set an English dub of the Harem Camp! anime for September 18 — a small announcement that says something big about 2026. Dubs no longer arrive through one pipeline. Crunchyroll still runs the largest dub operation in the West, but Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HIDIVE and a growing tier of independent studios all commission their own. Which makes "what should I watch dubbed" a harder question than it was five years ago, and a better one to answer with a ranking instead of a catalogue.
Quick answer
The highest-ranked English-dubbed anime on SenpaiRanks are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (adjusted score 9.08, Bones, 64 episodes, 2009), Steins;Gate (9.04, White Fox, 24 episodes, 2011) and Cowboy Bebop (8.72, Sunrise, 26 episodes, 1998). All three carry English dubs widely regarded as equal to or better than the Japanese track. SenpaiRanks rates every title on two axes — Consensus (how broadly liked) and Quality (how well it holds up) — rather than the single blended number MyAnimeList and IMDb publish. Crunchyroll carries most of this list; Netflix holds Cowboy Bebop and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in most regions.
How we picked these
Two filters, in this order. First the board: every title here clears a strong adjusted score on the SenpaiRanks ranking, so nothing made the cut on dub reputation alone. Second the dub: the English track has to be the version people actively recommend, not a tolerable alternative. That second filter is what knocks out a lot of otherwise excellent shows — a 9.0 series with a flat dub is a bad answer to this specific question.
A note on platforms. We list where each show streams without preferring anyone. Crunchyroll's own "best dubs" pages can only recommend the Crunchyroll catalogue, which is exactly the bias that makes a neutral list worth writing.
The ranked list
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood — 9.08
Bones, 64 episodes, 2009. Streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix in most regions. The dub that settled the argument. Vic Mignogna and Maxey Whitehead as the Elric brothers, a full Funimation bench behind them, and a script that never sounds translated. It is also the highest-scoring show on our entire board, which makes the dub question almost academic — you are watching this either way.
2. Steins;Gate — 9.04
White Fox, 24 episodes, 2011. Streaming on Crunchyroll. J. Michael Tatum's Okabe is the rare dub performance that changes how a character reads. The Japanese Okabe is a chuunibyou bit; the English one is a man performing confidence he does not have, and the show's second half lands harder for it. Localising the 2010 internet-forum slang was a genuine writing problem and the adaptation solved it.
3. Cowboy Bebop — 8.72
Sunrise, 26 episodes, 1998. Streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll depending on region. The reference point. Steven Blum, Wendee Lee, Beau Billingslea and Melissa Fahn recorded a jazz-noir script in 1999 and the result still gets cited as the argument that dubs can be definitive. If someone tells you they only watch subbed, this is the show you use.
Here is the official trailer if you have somehow never seen it:
4. Death Note — 8.59
Madhouse, 37 episodes, 2006. Streaming on Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu depending on region. Brad Swaile and Alessandro Juliani turned a chess match into a two-hander. The dub leans harder into Light's theatricality than the Japanese track does, which is either the point or the problem depending on who you ask — but nobody argues it is phoned in.
5. Spy x Family — 8.38
CloverWorks, 2022. Streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu. The best modern comedic dub. Megan Shipman's Anya is the load-bearing performance — a child voice that stays funny across two seasons without curdling into shtick, which is much harder than it sounds.
6. Trigun — 8.20
Madhouse, 26 episodes, 1998. Streaming on Crunchyroll. Johnny Yong Bosch as Vash is the other 90s benchmark alongside Bebop. The comedy half and the tragedy half need completely different registers and he plays both without a seam. If you liked Stampede, the original dub is the reason older fans kept asking for a remake in the first place.
7. Samurai Champloo — 8.19
Manglobe, 26 episodes, 2004. Streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu depending on region. Steve Blum again, this time as Mugen, with Kirk Thornton and Kari Wahlgren. The hip-hop-Edo tonal collision is easier to sell in English than most anachronistic scripts have any right to be.
8. Hellsing Ultimate — 8.11
10 episodes, 2006-2012. Streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu depending on region. Crispin Freeman's Alucard is the most quoted dub performance of the 2000s, and the OVA format meant the English cast got film-length recording time per episode. The result is closer to an audio drama with animation attached.
9. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — 8.09
Trigger, 10 episodes, 2022. Streaming on Netflix. The English track was produced as a lead version rather than a translation, because the show was built for a Netflix-first, game-adjacent audience. Zach Aguilar and Emi Lo carry it. If you played Cyberpunk 2077 in English, this is the only correct way to watch.
10. Baccano! — 8.05
Brain's Base, 13 episodes, 2007. Streaming on Crunchyroll. A prohibition-era New York story where the dub has an unfair structural advantage: the characters are supposed to be American. The Funimation cast went all-in on regional accents and the show is genuinely better in English.
11. Black Lagoon — 7.96
Madhouse, 24 episodes, 2006. Streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu depending on region. Same advantage as Baccano! — a multinational cast swearing in a South China Sea port city. Maryke Hendrikse's Revy is the reason people rewatch it. The dub's profanity is not a localisation liberty; it is closer to the intent than a clean subtitle track.
12. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt — 7.44
Gainax, 13 episodes, 2010. Streaming on Crunchyroll. Written to sound like American adult animation and dubbed accordingly. Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial do things here that would not clear a standards note anywhere else. Lowest score on this list, highest dub-versus-sub gap.
What this list is not
It is not a ranking of dub studios, and it is not a claim that these are the twelve best anime full stop. Several all-time entries are missing precisely because their English tracks are unremarkable. That is the honest version of a dub list — a lot of "best dubbed anime" posts are just a top-12 with the word "dubbed" added to the headline.
Why the ranking matters here
SenpaiRanks publishes two numbers per title instead of one. Consensus tells you how broadly a show is liked. Quality tells you how well it holds up once the hype cycle is over. A single weighted average — MyAnimeList's model, and IMDb's — collapses those into a number that answers neither question cleanly. For a dub list that distinction is load-bearing: Panty & Stocking has a modest Consensus and a devoted rewatch base, and the two-axis board shows you that instead of hiding it behind a 7.4.
Every show above links to its page, where both axes sit side by side with the vote distribution. If you have watched the dub, rate it — your score joins the board, and you get to see where your taste actually lands against the crowd rather than guessing.
Where to go next
Era and genre cuts of the same board: best 80s and 90s anime ranked covers the Bebop/*Trigun* generation in full, best cyberpunk anime ranked goes deeper on Edgerunners and Akira, and best webtoon and manhwa anime ranked covers the Korean-source wave that now ships day-and-date dubs. For current-season dubs, Crunchyroll's September 21 anime nights and the fall 2026 premiere dates list what is landing next. The Akira 4K re-release explainer is the deep cut on the most-argued dub in the medium.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What is the best English-dubbed anime?
A: On the SenpaiRanks board, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ranks highest at an adjusted 9.08, followed by Steins;Gate at 9.04 and Cowboy Bebop at 8.72. All three have English tracks widely rated equal to or better than the Japanese.
Q: Are anime dubs better than subs?
A: Neither wins universally. Shows written with Western settings — Baccano!, Black Lagoon, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — usually play better dubbed. Shows built on Japanese wordplay or honorific nuance usually do not.
Q: Where can I watch dubbed anime?
A: Crunchyroll carries the largest dub library, but Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and HIDIVE all commission their own, and independent studios like OceanVeil now license dubs directly. Availability varies by region.
Q: Does Crunchyroll dub every anime?
A: No. Crunchyroll dubs a large share of simulcasts but not all of them, and several major titles are dubbed exclusively for Netflix or Disney+.
Q: How does SenpaiRanks rank anime?
A: Every title gets two scores — Consensus, for how broadly it is liked, and Quality, for how well it holds up — computed with a disclosed Bayesian method across multiple sources, instead of MyAnimeList's single weighted average.
Q: Which anime has the most famous English dub?
A: Cowboy Bebop. The 1999 Steven Blum recording is the performance most often cited as proof a dub can be the definitive version of a show.
