The thing about The Ice Wall is that it shouldn't have worked on paper — and it does. Studio KAI ships April 2, 2026, ongoing run, and the storyboard reel that leaked alongside the announcement is the reason this one's getting watched.

The setup

On the surface, high school student Koyuki "Koyun" Hikawa seems unapproachable and terrifying to most other students. In reality, Koyun is just insecure and prone to overthinking due to her uncomfortable experiences in middle school. However, her chance encounter with two boys in school—Minato Amamiya and Youta Hino—sparks a change in her. Like her friend Miki Azumi, the boys are never afraid to approach Koyun and see her for who she really is. Although Koyun starts spending more time with Miki, Minato, and Youta, she finds herself torn between her newfound bliss and her fear of getting too attached to others. It's the kind of premise that sounds tidy in two sentences and gets weirder on screen — in a good way. Stick around past the cold open.

The hands on it

Studio KAI's on the line, with TBS, Rakuonsha, Universal Music Japan on the committee. Their recent ledger is the thing flagging this as more than spring filler — the storyboards on the opener show actual budget, not contractual minimum.

When it airs

Thursdays at 23:56 (JST). Ongoing run, episode count TBC. Same-day simulcast windows are on the usual Western streamers — check your local Crunchyroll, HIDIVE, or Hulu listing for the timed slot.

The case for it

Sitting at 7.84 with 11,914 early scorers. The signal isn't peak hype — it's retention, which is the metric that actually matters when you're picking what survives your rotation. Add it to the rotation. It's not the loudest pick of the season; that's exactly what makes it a worthwhile one.
