Is Overgeared Anime Good? Episodes 1-4 Review & Where to Watch

A broke, shameless blacksmith hero turns a VRMMO power fantasy into one of fall's funniest shows.

Webtoon adaptations have a patchy track record, and VRMMO shows usually need a gimmick to stand out. Overgeared found one: its hero is kind of terrible. Anime News Network's October 20 review of episodes 1-4 calls it one of the most entertaining new shows of the fall season, and the reason is comedy, not power-scaling.

Quick answer

Is Overgeared good? Per ANN's episodes 1-4 review, yes — it's a surprisingly solid action comedy. The J.C. Staff adaptation (director Ayako Kōno, scripts by Kenta Ihara) streams on Crunchyroll with a same-day English dub, and airs in Japan on Tokyo MX and BS11. It adapts the Korean webtoon by Dong Wook Lee and Team Argo, based on Sae Nal Park's web novel. SenpaiRanks is tracking it on the fall 2026 board; rate it on its ranking page to move its score.

Grid is the whole point

Most isekai and game protagonists are either bland nice guys or the coolest person in the room. Grid is neither. He leeches off his family, blows his money on in-game purchases, and plays the VRMMO Satisfy purely hoping to get rich — with a huge ego on top. ANN argues those flaws are exactly why he's fun: he's so shameless that his schemes loop back around to hilarious. Ricco Fajardo's dub performance gets a specific shout-out; the punched-up script suits the show's tone instead of fighting it.

Not much of a power fantasy

Grid lands a legendary blacksmith class within minutes — then promptly dies and drops to a negative level. That sets the pattern. Every exploit and new piece of gear is followed by bad luck or a bad decision that sends him back to square one. The latest arc, a crafting contest and a hidden quest to save some NPC blacksmiths from a greedy businessman, ends with Grid winning everything and pocketing nothing. It's a good punchline.

Rough edges

ANN flags two weak spots: some jokes don't land (the gay-panic gags with the blacksmiths), and the supporting cast is thin so far. The exception is Euphemina, a skill-stealing player as crass as Grid. Their chemistry is the bit the critic most wants more of.
