GKIDS announced on Thursday that CITY The Animation, Kyoto Animation's adaptation of Keiichi Arawi's CITY manga, gets a Collector's Edition Blu-ray on December 15. It's sold only through the online GKIDS store, per Anime News Network. If you missed the show when it aired, you don't have to wait for the disc.
Quick answer
CITY The Animation is a 13-episode TV comedy from Kyoto Animation, directed by Taichi Ishidate (*Violet Evergarden*, Beyond the Boundary). It streamed worldwide on Amazon Prime Video from July 2025, and that's still where to watch it. The GKIDS Collector's Edition Blu-ray comes out December 15, 2026, exclusively on the GKIDS online store. It's based on the manga by Keiichi Arawi, the creator of Nichijou, which SenpaiRanks ranks at 8.04. CITY's own board is open but hasn't collected enough votes for a score yet.
What's in the box
The GKIDS set is the full package rather than a bare disc release:
- a 72-page booklet
- four art cards and an A3 poster
- "cut out movies" for all 13 episodes
- previews, TV spots and the team preview
- clean opening and ending animation
Is it good?
If you liked Nichijou, yes. Arawi's humor is the same mix of deadpan and sudden chaos, now spread across a whole town instead of one friend group. This was also Kyoto Animation's first non-sequel anime in six years, so the studio put its A-team on it. Tamami Tokuyama (*Sound! Euphonium*) did the character designs and Shiori Yamazaki (*Violet Evergarden: The Movie*) handled the art direction. Riho Furui sings the opening, "Hello," and TOMOO the ending, "Lucky."
CITY The Animation — Kyoto Animation
The manga's story is now finished. It first ended in February 2021, came back in Kodansha's Morning in December 2024, and wrapped for good with volume 15 in December 2025. Kodansha USA has the series in English.
